What the last day of coverage has to show

Cover work goes wrong in one predictable way, which is drifting. The cure is naming the last day before the first week starts, and agreeing what that day has to leave behind.

The owner

An end date is a feature

The desk

Coverage with no end is a job that nobody interviewed for. Naming the last day up front keeps everyone honest, including whoever is doing the covering.

It also changes the work itself. Somebody who knows they are leaving on a known date builds for the person coming after them instead of building around themselves.

The owner

What has to be true on that day

The desk

Every month inside the gap is closed and ties to the bank. Every filing that fell inside the weeks has gone. The calendar exists on paper with names against it. And whatever was learned along the way is written where the next person will find it.

That last one is the piece that usually gets skipped, and it is the piece your permanent hire will quietly judge you on.

The owner

The handover is the deliverable

The desk

A cover job hands over a business, not a folder of files. So it includes the logins, the list of who files what, the questions still open, and a short note on anything left deliberately for the permanent person to settle.

Leaving decisions open on purpose is good practice. Leaving them open by accident is how a few empty weeks turn into a wasted year.

The owner

What the last day is never

The desk

It is never a cliff. If the permanent hire slips, the date moves by agreement and in writing, set with the same clarity as the first one was.

What it does not become is quiet drift, where nobody can say who owns the close this month.

What the final week produces

The desk

A handover somebody could actually start from, the closes finished, and a plain note on what was left open for the next person and why.

Shape only above. Nothing of yours is printed on this site.

A temporary chair changes nothing reserved

The desk

Covering empty weeks is ordinary work, and a temporary chair does not come with a CPA credential. This desk has none. A firm that holds one still signs audits, reviews and assurance opinions, even in the middle of a gap, and if one falls inside your weeks you will hear that on the first call while the ordinary weeks carry on closing. Every part of that is set out on the disclosures page.

Why a named end makes the work better

The desk

A last day on the calendar forces everything into writing, because nothing can be allowed to live in the head of a person who is leaving on a date everybody knows.

Breadth is why the handover holds together, with the close, the filings and the return already understood by the same desk that wrote the note. Height is knowing which open questions genuinely belong to the permanent hire and which had to be settled before the chair changed hands.

Where owners land on this

The desk

I came looking for cover. What I wanted was to hand the next person something better than I was handed.

You will be talking to the Steven Palmieri practice. A sentence about the gap span is enough to start.
